Wednesday, Thursday and Friday!
A few months ago I took a leap of faith and changed my career path from Bartending to becoming the Marketing Direct at Zone Home Entertainment in Storm Lake. We have a booth at the Clay County Fair selling DIRECTV and for 3 days in a row I took every opportunity I could to try some fair food. Here is what I found!
Girl'd Cheese
I can't lie, this was probably my absolute favorite thing at the fair. My favorite food is red sauce.. spaghetti, pizza, lasagna. So this was obviously a win for me. We tried the Pickle Wrap Grilled cheese last year and weren't impressed. The Lasanga one completely redeemed this food truck for me. Ask anyone around me, I talked about this to everyone, I can't rate this because it wouldn't be fair to all the other foods.. just note it's something I will never forget and I'll always go back for every chance I can.
Corn in a Cup
I've only ever tried one bite of Elote one time and loved it. So when I saw this stand I had to try it again. The option to have it in a cup was great. Less mess, more corn, easier to eat, I think if I were to get it agin I'd try on the cob. I didn't love the red sauce on it (I don't know what it was) but it was awesome that you got to choose your seasoning to top it with. I chose Tajín, of course. 6/10 -good, but something about it on the cob was better than in a bowl.
Hand Cut Curly Fries
After the Corn in a Cup I was left craving something salty. When I think of curly fries I think of Arby's or Hardee's. If that's what you want these aren't it. My first thought was that $7 was a lot for a side of fries. I was pleasantly surprised when it was a HUGE plate. However, I failed to see before I ordered that they were hand cut. Which is hard to get perfect. They cooked to order which was great, but they got soggy, cold and limp very quickly. The best part was they had condiments and seasonings behind the truck so you could dress them and season them as you'd like. 4/10 unless you plan to scarf them down within a few minutes I wouldn't recommend.
Black Earth Java
If you read my previous blogs.. I told you I'd visit them plenty. Two mornings I had the hot Mudslinger, sub almond milk no whipped. Brenden was all about the Hupe with the RedBull upgrade, which was spendy but worth it (the big blue one). The small geeen one is the sweet tart which was for me, but I ordered him one with a RedBull upgrade, I just never took a picture. My favorite part about the hot coffee is the chocolate covered espresso bean served on top. I'd go back every day if Storm Lake had a location just for those. My wallet and waistline are happy we don't. 10/10 - always appreciate a small, local store.. especially if their product is good!
Chicken in a Pita
This made me feel brave without actually being brave. I don't love Gyros, but they look amazing. So I chose the safe option and was so glad I did. The chicken was tender, juicy, flavorful. You can choose to omit toppings you don't like but I kept it as is. They have hot sauce you can add to your liking so I added a good amount. This is my second favorite but very close to being my favorite thing I've tried. So filling I couldn't finish, but so good I wanted to. 10/10
Quesadilla Junction -Chicken Quesadilla
I couldn't decide on supper.. so I chose the place with the shortest line.. in my mind that means one of two things, not good, or fast service. I was very pleasantly surprised. It was $1 extra to add jalapeños, but they loaded them up so it was well worth it. My only wish was if they would have served it with salsa or hot sauce as well instead of just sour cream. 8/10
Kiwanis Hot Beef
My Great Uncle drove up to Spencer and asked to treat me to lunch. I let him chose and I was not a bit disappointed. If you love a good Hot Beef give this a try. Especially if it's gloomy and rainy out like it was today, it hits the spot. 9/10
Side note, this is the first time I've ever seen hot beef served with cheese and a tomato. Is this a common thing? Or just a signature thing the Kiwanis do?
Simply Sweet Cheesecake
If you like Cheesecake, go now! They offer personal sized Cheesecakes or sample packs. The Turtle was my favorite, Brenden loved the Reeces, our neighbor vendors had cherry and we weren't sure if the one was raspberry or strawberry but everyone absolutely loved it!! 10/10 so so good.
Tacos Asada
I was eyeballing this all week. I LOVE Mexican food! They had a few different options of tacos, some quesadillas and a few other items. The sauces were served on the side to top the tacos and you'd like. 9/10 typical steak taco, sauces are what really made them stand out.
Kitchen Craft, Stewart Mayo -Homemade Chicken
We were lucky to have some great neighbors in our building. One being a pots and pans salesman who cooked chicken all day long and shared with the vendors at closing time each night. My favorite thing he made was a 9 vegetable salad topped with Italian dressing. I felt like it helped me balance out the rest of the fair food 😂 if you get a chance this weekend, stop and check out one of his shows. He has door prizes gives out free food samples!
Overall I'm super happy with everything I've tried. If you haven't read my previous two posts go do so for more delicious discoveries during the fair. One thing in my first post people really picked out was the Pickle Pizza from Godfathers. I brought home two pieces last night for Brandon, and even after a 45 minute drive he still thought it was delicious. I hope you make it to the fair this weekend and I hope you try something new.
Stop by and say hi to Stewart and try his veggie salad and definitely make sure to stop by and see the boys at the Zone/DIRECTV booth for me! (Make them smile for a picture and send it to me!) We have some great neighbors selling homemade wooden hogs, honey, frozen wine mixes, pop up chairs and solar lights, fused jewelry, and even new roofs (guaranteed for 50 years)
Fair 2023 did not disappoint. If you recommend something I didn't get to try let me know so I can try it next year. Thanks for reading my loves! Have an amazing day 🥰
